It Was a Dark and Stormy Night

Campers: nature's way of feeding mosquitoes - Author Unknown

Recently we took our motorhome out for a weekend at the Okmulgee Lake campgrounds. This was our first trip since the purchase last December.

Our RV had been winterized, that's putting antifreeze in all the water lines for the winter season if it will be stored. We weren't sure if all the lines would function and if the refrigerator would be cold enough. This was our test trip.

We met another couple that also have a large motorhome and have camped more than we have so it was nice to have them there for advice. Okmulgee Lake is about an hour from Tulsa and we didn't want to go too far in case something happened to our unknown systems.

We arrive at the campground, a lovely lake and lots of places for tents or RVs like ours. There are lots of families here and all the amenities we need. Monty and Trent get the electricity and water hooked up and they go around checking faucets.

The hot water heater is not easily accessed but he Monty gets it turned on. It's warm but not as hot in the shower as I would like. Will see tomorrow if it gets better. We get the refrigerator turned on and put our food inside. Purchasing bags of ice we place them in the lower drawers to help with cooling. After just a small time it is getting cold. Thank goodness that works.

With our friends we get our meal set up and have an early dinner. We enjoy our evening and time to turn in.

The next day is Saturday and there is nothing major planned. We don't have a boat or anything like that and I don't swim. I straighten up the motorhome and organize a few things. Monty decides to take a walk around the campgrounds. I want to shower but no hot water so I wash my hair only in cold. I'd like to have an instant hot water heater, have to see what that would cost and if feasible.

Later in the evening we cook out and enjoy a table full of salads and fun. I put out my citronella candles and have sprayed Off! on my ankles and wrists in hopes of fighting off the mosquitoes and flies. I am the only one that get a bite. Ugh!! I hate being outside. Maybe I need to make something to wear out of mosquito netting.

It's time to go back to the motorhome and settle in for the evening. I clean up from our meal and turn off the lights. About 3 am I hear thunder and see lightning. Was a storm predicted? Wifi is spotty and I can't get any service on my phone in the back where the bedroom is located. The storm grown and intensifies to the point where the force of the wind is making the motorhome rock back and forth. The electricity goes out and we lose the A/C.

I am getting more and more nervous fearing a tornado. I doubt I would hear a siren and have no idea how to get to a shelter. We lay there and listen to the fierceness of the storm. I am terrified, Monty is the calm one. I say prayers to protect my children and grandchildren if I am gone on this day and make my peace.

Fortunately we made it through safely and by morning Monty is out checking for damage. Looks okay except for one of the A/C covers on the roof.

We decided to head home earlier than we planned since more storms are to come. As we pull in the "living room" slide, water pours in over the driver's chair and onto the floor. grabbing towels to soak what I can reach. Need to find out what is up with the slide awning.

We had a great time for our first weekend in the motorhome and learned a lot too. We love it and look forward to many more trips and soon living full time.
